Can people really be in control of their data, and can consent ensure that?

I recently wrote about the Black Mirror episode “Joan is Awful“đź“ş, where the main character finds herself the protagonist of a broadcasted TV series🎥, for which she had allegedly given consent in the lengthy terms of service she signed.

Perhaps the best articulation of why the prevalent approach of focusing on consent is problematic, as well as its alternative, I recently found in this fantastic essay đź“– ‘Kafka In The Age of AI and the Futility of Privacy as Control’, written by Daniel Solove and Woodrow Hartzog.

I am sharing here my key takeaways, but strongly encourage you to read the whole thing ➡️ source.
